Bangor's Poseidon adventure

The swimming pool in Bangor, north Wales, gained extensive media coverage recently after new lifeguarding equipment developed by Poseidon Technologies helped to save the life of a young swimmer who got into difficulties.

Unnoticed by the lifeguards on duty, the girl, on holiday from Lancashire, sank to the bottom of the deep end of the pool. Within seconds, however, the Poseidon system had detected her presence and alerted pool staff, who then rescued and resuscitated her.

The whole incident from beginning to end is reported to have taken less than 90 seconds.

The system, made by French company Vision IQ, was installed in 2003 after the local authority felt that the Bangor pool - with its high windows creating a lot of glare on the water - was the most difficult of its eight pools to guard.

The Poseidon installation consists of underwater cameras attached to the walls of a pool beneath the surface, with each unit having a combined field of vision of over 180 degrees.

Overhead cameras cover those areas of a pool where the underwater units could be obstructed by swimmers in shallow water.

Using high-speed fibre optics, the cameras are linked to a cpu which analyses the video feeds in real-time, identifies suspicious situations and triggers an alarm. The alarm pagers, with a range of over 200m, use both audible and vibrating alerts and display the exact location of the incident and the elapsed time since detection.

A supervisory workstation acts as the command centre for the system. Fitted with an integrated flashing light and buzzer, it has a touch-sensitive screen to select viewing and surveillance options.

Passwords limit access to the system and lifeguards can view a particular area in the pool, with the capability of zooming in on a suspicious area.

The company has revealed that future developments will include an optional 'After Hours Intrusion' mode, where the alarm can be configured to sound locally at a police station or other security monitoring point.

Poseidon is the benchmark for computer-aided drowning detection systems. It uses advanced computer vision technology to analyse activity in a pool, captured by a network of cameras mounted both above and below the surface of the water.
