Penguins pick up on ice warning signs

The penguins at Edinburgh Zoo have been the first to test out an innovative new weather reactive winter safety device.

ThermoSign has a highly visible WARNING sign and is designed to be placed outdoors in public spaces such as offices, retail and shopping centres, car parks, industrial and leisure parks, hospitals, schools and public transport entrances.

The warning will only appear at temperatures of 5 degrees C or below to indicate that there is a risk of icy conditions in the area.

Energy efficient, the main body of the sign uses photoluminescent paint which is charged by natural sunlight to become visible in the dark for up to 14 hours. The warning element is thermochromic, which results in the ink starting to show when the temperature is below 5 degrees C.

Each sign - priced at £15.00 each - is dated and will last for a winter season, October to March. Two methods of mounting are available, self adhesion and board mounted for fixing to existing posts.
