MOD splashing out on new technology

Water purification specialist Industrial Purification Systems (IPS) has installed a new filter system at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) swimming pool training facility in Tidworth Leisure Centre in Wiltshire.

Jointly owned by the MOD and the local authority, the pool is rather different from a typical leisure centre because soldiers use it for part of their training when the site is closed to the public.

With fully clothed squaddies entering the pool regardless of where they have been previously, the dirt loading on the system was resulting in repeated failure of the existing plastic filters and IPS was tasked to find a long-term solution.

The company's recommendation was to install a stainless steel multi vessel 0.45 micron filtration system which, while significantly more expensive than other options, brought considerable benefits. The filtration technology used is the Vortex System.

Andy Evans from IPS says: "At the end of the day, any public swimming pool has got to be a pleasant experience for the user. But along with water quality issues, there is also the growing need for energy efficiency and cost reduction. Traditional filters are just not up to the job.

"For example, chemicals added to pool water to maintain quality are consumed by existing organic material. Filter technology providing 0.45-micron in a single pass results in the removal of more fine organic material. Hence the more organic material removed by the filters the less chemicals are required to maintain background levels. This not only makes it easier to maintain the balance within the pool but maintenance costs are reduced.

"Also, more solids are removed with each pass through the filter than any other existing technology. This means the clean up time of the pool is quicker, giving the public greater access following use by the army."

The new system uses mains water for cleaning so the make up water does not have to be heated, or chemicals added. Water usage is said to be a fraction of that previously required so considerable cost savings are anticipated in chemicals and heating. Chemical usage alone should be reduced by 12 to 15 per cent.

Looking to the future, should either the MOD or the local council decide to alter the criteria for the operation of the pool, the modular design of the filtration system allows for any necessary expansion.
