Repellent development for sports shoes

Repellent development for sports shoes

Technology developed to protect soldiers from chemical attack is claimed set to become the latest weapon of athletes on the track with sports shoes that repel water like never before.

Known as ion mask™, the process applies a protective layer over the surface of the shoe by means of an ionised gas or plasma. The treatment not only coats the external surfaces of the shoe but also the inside, between and around the individual fibres in the shoe. This is said to make the process particularly effective on shoes containing synthetic materials.

Developed by Oxfordshire-based company P2i, ion mask allows the foot to breathe but stops water seeping through the sides of the shoe; it bounces off the surface instead. Unlike conventional waterproof treatments that require additional layers to be sewn into the shoe during manufacture - which add weight and can result in poor fit - the ion mask treatment is applied after the shoe has been manufactured and doesn't compromise either fit or weight.

P2i is currently working closely with SATRA (the Shoe and Allied Trade Research Association) to fully define all the properties of ion mask enhancement on a variety of footwear and footwear fabrics to highlight all the benefits of the process.

The company's Technical Director, Dr Stephen Coulson, says: “However seriously you take your sport, it's more enjoyable with cool, dry feet.”

He added that they have shown the new technology to a number of leading sports shoe brands and several are considering the ion mask treatment for their products.

P2i Ltd was established in 2004 to commercialise super liquid-repellent treatments developed by the Ministry of Defence. Now on a commercial scale, P2i's enhancement process can be applied to a wide range of products in the medical, bioscience, electronics, automotive & aerospace and fashion & sports accessories markets.
