After Dark with CMT at Legoland

CMT (Creative Media Techniques) produced and co-ordinated all the technical production for LEGOLAND's 'After Dark' 2007 event, featuring three evenings of laser, light and dancing water shows at the park's Adventure Lake to launch the arrival of the new LEGO® Batman™ range.

Following a brief which specified something visually different and not dominated by fireworks - but equally eye-catching and fun - CMT's Tim Fothergill and his team compiled a music track, produced a creative storyboard and put together a technical spec. The music included tracks from the Batman Begins movie, together with some late 1990s dance tracks.

CMT supplied an impressive array of laser power for the event, comprising a 40W green YAG laser, a 15W red YAG and two 5W green DPSS lasers. All solid state, these were controlled via a 4-channel Pangolin system and run by SMTP timecode, originated by an Aquilla machine and generated via DV cam playback.

Mirrors were placed around the lake and used as diffraction effects and bounce points for the lasers.

CMT also provided four smoke machines, as well as bringing in Show Aquatique to supply the dancing fountains. The design for these incorporated nine special self-contained submersible floating units, each with integral lighting. Between them the fountains wielded 15 pumps, firing more than 1000 jets of water up to 60ft in the air. Control was via Aquatique's own proprietary PC operating system.

The pyro element of the show was supplied by Blackburn-based Classic Fireworks and ran for the last three minutes of the show. It was deliberately kept subtle and understated, a series of low level 'low noise, low dross' effects being chosen for their minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

After Dark 2007 was reported to be a massive success, pulling in more than 50,000 people into the park over the Easter weekend.
