Work has just finished on one of the biggest man-made caves ever seen and which features the world’s largest cavern and tallest waterfall.

The project, Adventure Learning Park (ALP), is at Belfast Activity Centre and was funded by the Big Lottery.

It has more than 200m of tunnels and passageways and a cavern which is 9.5m long, 4.5m wide and 8m high.

The facility, which also incorporates an 8m high waterfall, has been designed by civil and structural engineering consultants Paul Waite Associates in association with climbing wall company, Entre-Prises.

The complex is one of only four man-made realistic caves globally and is the largest ever seen in the UK. It has been designed in conjunction with an experienced caver to ensure authenticity and uses sprayed concrete on pre-bent reinforcement cages.

The complex, which opened this month, incorporates a structure suitable for climbing and abseiling as well as caving.

The three caving passages will be pumped with water, terminating in a sump or egress pond which users must swim through to leave the tunnels system.
