Radiator Renovator brings piece of Yorkshire to Richard III reburial

Radiator Renovator's workshop in West Yorkshire
Richard III, the last king of the House of York, won’t be buried in the county town – but visitors to his final resting place in Leicester Cathedral will nevertheless be kept warm by Yorkshire’s Radiator Renovator.

In preparation for the controversial monarch’s reburial, following the discovery of his remains beneath a car park in Leicester in 2012, a major refurbishment of the cathedral is taking place.

As part of this, Halifax-based Radiator Renovator completed the restoration of a number of ornate cast iron radiators. The job was made challenging by the huge weight of the four radiators, which are of an American rococo design. The two largest are 800kg each, with the other two weighing in at around 500kg and 350kg respectively.

Additionally, because the radiators are of a push nipple construction, they are particularly vulnerable when being moved, and had to be braced to stop bowing and cracking of the seals.

Radiator Renovator, which was set up four years ago by husband and wife team Andrew Whittingham and Vincenzina D’Alessandro, said the challenges were overcome thanks to a “practical thinking and problem solving approach”.

“The biggest problem – aside from the responsibility – was the sheer size and weight of them. This made everything so difficult and cumbersome,” said Whittingham. “We really had to think about how we went about everything, particularly around safety, and we had to be very inventive on how to move them around in the workshop and had to adapt to the needs of the radiators as opposed to managing the radiators around us.”

The radiators were successfully returned to Leicester for re-installation at the cathedral, with the ceremony to reinter Richard III taking place on 26 March.
