Digital Projection brings history to life at St Stephan's Cathedral

The show is powered by an M-Vision Laser 18K projector from Digital Projection
St Stephan's, a Baroque cathedral in Passau, Germany, has celebrated its 350-year history with Symphony of Light and Sound a spectacular videomapped show, projected on to the façade of the cathedral.

Telling the story of the Baroque cathedral, which is home to the largest cathedral organ in the world and was created by Italian masters in the 17th century, the multi-media show features sacred Christian music and take viewers on a journey through time, showcasing the church in all of its interations throughout the years.

The show was delivered by German company GF Bühnenfabrik and is powered by Digital Projection's M-Vision Laser 18K,a single chip DLP projector that offers an output of 18,000 lumens and 10,000:1 contrast ratio. The projector was designed to be used as a large-screen imaging solution for installations and events where ample light output is required, and features a motorised shift, zoom and focus, as well as a DisplayPort capable of accepting frames up to 60Hz, HDMI 1.4 for Side by Side, Frame Packing and Top Bottom 3D formats.

Mark Wadsworth, VP of Global Marketing at Digital Projection, said: "Thanks to its high brightness output and performance, a single projector allowed to map the entire cathedral to deliver a pristine show which exceeded the expectations of the event organiser."

"Over a month into the show's run, we've found the M-Vision 18K to be very reliable so far - standing up to the rigours of almost nightly perfomances. The value of this reliability can't be underestimated when delivering such a high-profile project," he added.

Harry Pillmayer, project manager for GF Bühnenfabrik GmbH, said: "We've been working with the cathedral for some time but this is the first time we have been commissioned on an outdoor projection of this magnitude and on a show with such a long run - so it's a really exciting project for us."
